Absztrakt

Nietzsche’s criticism of Christianity has been widely discussed, but his criticism of Buddhism has not been analyzed very often. Nietzsche was intrigued by Buddhism and Buddhism is often mentioned in his work critically as the second big nihilist religion beside Christianity. However, Nietzsche’s late work The Antichrist presents Buddhism in a positive light, as a practice of life contrasted to Christianity’s negation of life.

The paper poses the question of why and how Nietzsche changed his opinion of Buddhism. How does Buddhism relate to Nietzsche’s criticism of Christianity and eventually to his ideal of life? The problem is connected to the question of what idea of Buddhism Nietzsche could have had, what sources were available for him about Buddhism. The paper analyzes Shopenhauer’s influence on Nietzsche’s criticism of Buddhism to explain Nietzsche’s changing attitude.
